Gene Benson, Al Held’s longtime studio manager, instructed a class of 17 undergraduate students from SUNY New Paltz in painting techniques essential to Held’s studio practice. After watching Gene’s demonstration of bending and applying masking tape and painting forms with crisp outlines, the students created their own classic Held shapes on prepared canvases.
