Join us Sunday, September 8 at 2:30 pm for a public discussion about artist Ronald Bladen (1918–1988). The conversation—between Jim Clark, director of the Estate of Ronald Bladen; Daniel Belasco, executive director of the Al Held Foundation; and Loretta Howard, gallery director and historian—takes place at Held’s former home and studio in Boiceville, NY, and honors the vital thirty-year friendship between these two pioneers of postwar American geometric abstraction. Currently, two mid-scale Bladen sculptures from the 1970s are installed on the grounds, and an additional presentation of Bladen sculptures and drawings will be on view in Held’s painting studio. The event and exhibition are organized in partnership with the Estate of Ronald Bladen.
The Bladen exhibition appears in conjunction with the fourth edition of “On the Grounds,” an annual exhibition of outdoor sculpture organized by River Valley Arts Collective. Curated by Alyson Baker, the show features new ceramic sculpture by Natalia Arbelaez, Nicole Cherubini, Re Jin Lee, and Katy Schimert. Additionally, RVAC is presenting “Der Wolley Eulb 07,” a new site-specific fiber installation by Michelle Segre in Al Held’s former drawing studio.
Public tours of Ronald Bladen, On the Grounds, and Michelle Segre will occur on September 8, September 23, and October 13, 2024. The Bladen discussion on September 8th will occur immediately following the 12 pm tour that day, and visitors are welcome to participate in both programs back-to-back. (Please note tours of the River Valley Arts Collective exhibitions will not be part of the Bladen conversation starting at 2:30 pm.)
