We are excited to announce Der Wolley Eulb 07, an exhibition of new multimedia work by Michelle Segre. Organized by Alyson Baker, founder and executive director of River Valley Arts Collective, and presented in Al Held’s former drawing studio, the installation includes seven works completed specifically for this space.
Segre incorporates yarn, felted wool, ceramics, metal, and found natural materials to create sculptures that stretch out to meet the surrounding architecture. Although decidedly hand crafted, they appear to represent scientific structures from the cellular to the cosmic, while also evoking the spiritual and ceremonial. Vibrating color and linear motion courses through the work and radiates to the furthest points of connection—like giant spider webs capturing the mystery and majesty of the world around us.
Michelle Segre has had solo exhibitions at venues such as the lumber room in Portland, Oregon; University Art Museum, University at Albany, SUNY; as well as nine solo shows with Derek Eller Gallery in NY. Her work has been included in group exhibitions at the deCordova Museum in Lincoln, MA; the Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art in Overland Park, KS; Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum in Ridgefield, CT; and MoMA PS1 in Long Island City, NY. She has been honored with grants and fellowships, including the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellowship, the American Academy for the Arts and Letters Award, a NYFA grant, a Tiffany Foundation grant, a Colene Brown Art Prize, and a residency at the Civitella Ranieri Foundation in Umbria, Italy. Public collections include the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Tang Museum in Saratoga Springs; and the Chazen Museum of Art in Madison, WI. Segre is a graduate of the Cooper Union School of Art. She lives and works in New York City and Mount Washington, MA.
