The Brooklyn Rail hosted this edition of "New Social Environment" on the occasion of Al Held's major solo exhibition About Space at White Cube, London (June 26 – September 1, 2024). Artists Anna Kunz, Chris Martin, and Judy Pfaff and Rail contributor Pepe Karmel discuss masterworks from across Held’s five-decade career. The conversation touches on Held's novel modes of hard-edge abstraction; his development of a distinct visual language ripe with spatial complexity; and Held’s engagement in a continuous process of experimentation with scale, form, and color.
